Career Services at IST Austria  The IST Austria Career Services Office is dedicated to inform, advise, and support students and postdocs on career matters. We encourage you to think about how to shape your career and what are the necessary skills and experience you need to acquire. As a scientist, you are not only expected to conduct state-of-the-art research. You also have to communicate your results via presentations at conferences, writing a paper, or while teaching a class. You need to be able to work in teams and at the same time be self-motivated and autonomous. You have to achieve results with limited supervision, and remain flexible and adaptable in approaching complex and uncertain problems. While a scientific education historically has been a preparation for an academic career, the skills you acquire as a scientist are useful in many other job sectors. Our goal is to support students and postdocs in finding a career that is right for them. We are fully aware and fully support that students and postdocs will move into a variety of different job sectors. Yet, leaving science is often perceived as failure. One of our goals is to frankly discuss career prospects in academia. Another is to work towards an openness for a rich diversity of job prospects for trained academics. We want to help you finding a successful and meaningful path - no matter what career you choose.   What do we expect from our students and postdocs in terms of career planning? It is never too early to start thinking about your subsequent move. But delaying this question may put you under pressure. We recommend that you start planning at least one year in advance before your contract expires. We expect you to be proactive. Our goal is to support you, but there is only one person who can be in the driving seat when it comes to your career: you!
